Science fiction is one genre of film that has captured the imaginations of movie-goers generation after generation. With the recent colossal success of James Cameron’s epic, Avatar, it is certain that there will be many more sci-fi spectaculars in store for us in the future. However, there is already a rich history of sci-fi classics that still hold up today. Here is a look back at three of the greatest science fiction movies of all time.
1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
This film was the result of a joint project between legendary sci-fi novelist, Arthur C. Clarke, and renowned filmmaker, Stanley Kubrick. Upon its release, the film was lavished with critical acclaim for its depth as well as Oscars for its special effects. The makers of this film had the bravery to present movie goers with a truly cerebral experience that didn’t water down its complex narrative in shape or fashion. While this film may not be for everyone, it managed to successfully present movie-goers with a vision of the advancement of human technology, the grandeur of space, and even the course of human evolution in a miraculous and realistic manner.
2. Alien (1979)
The second film on our list is one that not only managed to capture the imagination of sci-fi fans world over but also one that resulted in many people running out of the theater in a terror stricken panic. The story may seem to be a rather simple tale of “space truckers” discovering a derelict space ship and the eggs housing deadly alien organisms inside. However, thanks to Ridley Scott’s visionary direction, a very intelligent script, and fantastic art design, the film is laced with stunning visuals, commentary on corporate power in society, and subtext addressing human beings’ innate fear of sexuality.
3. The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Star Wars is a grand space epic that will still be remembered decades from now. However, many sci-fi fans consider its successor, the Empire Strikes Back, to be an even better film. This sequel was brave enough to chart new territory story wise above and beyond that of its fairytale like predecessor. The fact that Darth Vader was revealed to be Luke Skywalker’s father gave the film a near Shakespearian resonance. This is also one adventure movie that ends with the bad guys actually gaining the upper hand without a clear resolution that set things back to the status quo of good prevailing. While the follow-up, Return of the Jedi, was a disappointment in certain regards, the Empire Strikes Back made sure that the Star Wars brand would live on as a science fiction phenomenon to this day.
