World famous Hollywood, California is one of the best known cities in the world, however it not a city, it’s mayor is honorary, it has no city council or other city officers. Stroll down Hollywood Blvd., take in the sights, visit the Wax Museum, the Entertainment Museum, and the Kodak Theatre, have your picture taken with one or more of the many celebrity look-alikes hanging around, go shopping at Frederick’s Of Hollywood or at one of the many specialty shops, dine at one of the many restaurants, go dancing at Wiskey A Go-Go, take in a concert at the Greek Theatre or take in a movie at one of Hollywood’s famous theatres.

I’ve seen people offered jobs on Christmas Eve and I’ve seen people get job offers on New Year’s Eve, too. It does happen.

If a company is planning for a big New Year, they might try to end this year by getting their ducks in a row so to speak by ensuring they have the proper staff in place this year rather than waiting until the new year. Don’t assume everyone takes December off or that they don’t have time to hire during this month. People hire staff during December, trust me.

2. Beat out the lazy people who give up early.

Let’s face it, it’s not difficult to start winding down for the year on December 1 and feel like “the year is already over.” How many people do you know who spend more of their workdays Christmas shopping during the month of December than doing actual work? Some people start looking at the New Year before the current year is over and you can use this to your advantage. Don’t believe for a second that all employers think like this, and that “you can’t get a job during December.” This is a myth and it’s not true. As mentioned above, I’ve seen job offers extended on Christmas Eve before people take a few days off for Christmas and I’ve also seen job offers extended on New Year’s Eve before people go away to celebrate the New Year. Personally, the latest I’ve received a job offer for one of my candidates was December 22. What a great way for that candidate (and me!) to end the year.

3. Use the Christmas holidays to take the next step in your career.

Hopefully, you are one of those people who constantly updates your resume so that you can quickly apply for jobs that arise without having to create one from scratch and risk missing the application cutoff date. The Christmas holidays are great but once the “big day” on December 25th has passed, many people get kind of bored after a few days off work especially if you’re experiencing a White Christmas with lots of snow and ice outside and you waited too late to book the New Year’s cruise to the Caribbean. Use this downtime to at least prepare for your job search if not actually applying for jobs that you see advertised.

The month of December is a great time to look for a new job and a better time to actually get one. Not everyone celebrates Christmas and not everyone can afford to take the month of December off so don’t assume you can’t get a new job during this month.

The only reason why you can’t get a new job during December is if you don’t try to get one during December.

Let other people make a New Year’s resolution to find a job next year. If you realize that a Christmas job search can pay big dividends now, you’ll beat out people who aren’t as motivated and smart as you are.

In France during the reign of Louis XI (1107-1115), the Chateau du Clos-Luce was built on Gallo-Roman foundations. After completion, the king gave the residence of pink brick to his favorite, Etienne le Loup, a cook’s assistant he had ennobled. At that time, the estate was called the Manoir du Cloux and was surrounded by fortifications, the sole remnants of which are the remains of the watchtower. Etienne Le Loup also had a large dovecote which could house 500 pigeons; it is still intact at the bottom of the park.

When Charles VIII of France bought the chateau in July 1490, he made it a royal residence and it was to remain so for two centuries. While the Royal family and their Court continued to reside at the Chteau d’Amboise in the Loire Valley, their secondary residence was the Manoir du Cloux. Charles VIII had the chapel built here for the Queen, Anne de Bretagne, in mourning for her children who died young.

In later years, the young Duke of Angouleme, the future Francis I, organized war games in the gardens of the Clos-Lucé. The sister of Francis I, Marguerite de Navarre, wrote the first erotic stories of “L’Heptaméron” there. It was under Francis I that Le Clos-Lucé became the house symbolising the Renaissance movement in France. Francis I had painters, architects and poets, such as Clément Marot, brought here on the advice of his sister, all of whom were seeking royal protection. But Leonardo da Vinci was undoubtedly the greatest of those to cross the threshold of Le Clos Lucé.

Le Clos Lucé is one of the jewels of the Renaissance. It is the only chateau to have been built of both brick and tufa stone (with the exception of Le Plessis-les-Tours), extracted from the region’s quarries. It is also one of the best furnished residences in the Val de Loire. Apart from the hovel where he was born in Vinci, Le Clos Lucé was the only home of Leonardo da Vinci. In fact, Leonardo da Vinci spent his life between Florence, Milan and Rome, offering his services as engineer, architect and artist to the rulers of the day, who acted as his protectors. He lived at Le Clos Luce for 3 years and ended his days there.

It was in 1516 Francis I brought Leonardo da Vinci to the Chteau de Cloux and installed him there, again on the advice of his sister, Marguerite de Navarre. Leonardo da Vinci traveled across the Alps, carrying with him on muleback three of his most remarkable paintings. These were the Mona Lisa, St. Anne and St. John the Baptist, which he completed at Le Clos Lucé. A pension of 700 golden Ecus a year was granted him by the king and Leonardo was “free to think, dream and work”. Leonardo da Vinci was treated with real affection by Francis I who called him “my father”, his sister Marguerite and the whole Court. He found a very special inspiration there, which he passed on to his disciples, while teaching them his techniques. He did his utmost to pass on his knowledge to them until the end of his life.

A multidisciplinary genius, Leonardo da Vinci made some extraordinary scientific discoveries and invented machines that were four centuries in advance. Leonardo’s first interest was in the military domain, studying arms and machines of war. It seems he was the first to have had the idea of a submachine gun, at the time of the siege of Florence by the pontifical troops in 1470.

His studies extended to numerous domains, such as hydraulics, mechanics and aeronautics. After having observed birds for a long time and studied their flight, Leonardo constructed a sort of glider with articulated wings inspired by the wings of a bat. He imagined also the principle of the parachute and vertical elevation by an inclined fan blade, anticipating the helicopter.

In the model gallery at Clos Lucé, the 40 machines of Leonardo da Vinci are exhibited, reconstructed by IBM after the drawings of the genius, amongst which figure the first car, the metric counter, the paddle steamer and the double-hulled vessel.

Leonardo da Vinci carried out various commissions for the king as designer of Court festivals, architect, civil engineer (studies for the Canal de Romorantin, locks on the Loire), military engineer, town planner, advisor.

After writing “No being disappears into the void” and asking for holy sacrament, Leonardo da Vinci died at Le Clos Lucé on 2nd May 1519 at the age of 67. In a will drawn up by Matre Guillaume Boreau, Notary of the Royal Court, he left all his books, painting instruments and drawings to Francesco Melzi and a fine coat to Mathurine, his serving-woman.

In the 1960s a major restoration was started at Clos Lucé to restore its Renaissance atmosphere. The aim was to leave it, both architecturally and in terms of interior décor, as Leonardo da Vinci would have known it. Thanks to the skilled craftsmen working on wood, stone and glass, the home of Leonardo once again looks as it did centuries ago. Leonardo’s kitchen (the old guardroom) then the great Council Chamber, the underground rooms where the 40 machines can be seen and Leonardo da Vinci’s bedchamber and, last but not least, the chapel and its frescoes, have, one by one, been restored to the way they used to look.

Amboise is situated on the Loire about twenty kilometers due east of Tours on N152. The Chteau and the Hall are open daily all year round (except 25 December and 1 January). The landscaped itinerary is open daily from 1 March to 15 November inclusive.

What do you mean hidden Mickey’s, how can a six-foot tall mouse be hidden?

Well, as if Walt Disney and his imagineers didn’t give us enough to look at when we visit their wonderful parks, they also had a little inside joke running.

Hidden Mickey’s were always meant to be just that, hidden. They were originally placed in certain attractions by the imagineers so they could show their friends and family that they actually did work on that attraction, it became their little secret, a kind of signature only to shared with a select few. But now the secret is out.

Still baffled as to what a Hidden Mickey is?

Firstly, to make things a little more interesting, there are two main types of Hidden Mickey’s. The first type, and the original, is the most obvious, and consists of three circles, one large circle with two smaller circles placed above and to either side of the larger circle to give the famous Mickey Mouse silhouette, . The second type of Hidden Mickey is sometimes slightly harder to see, taking the form of a side profile of the great Mouse, think side profile of Hitchcock at the start of his movies and you will get the idea.

So where are these Hidden Mickey’s?

Well this is the fun part. You have to find them yourself. If you have never visited any of the Disney parks then we are sure that when you do make your first trip the last thing you will be thinking about is Hidden Mickey’s, but, if like us you have visited several times, you can consider the Hidden Mickey’s as a new challenge, something else to do other than standing in line for Test Track (by the way, we know of at least two Hidden Mickey’s in the queue area for Test Track!).

There are books out there to help you, all unofficial of course, and we are sure that you have seen people running around with the books, or looking behind them on an attraction instead of straight ahead like everyone else, well these people are probably looking for a Hidden Mickey, it might even be us. Some people dedicate an entire visit to the parks just to looking for Hidden Mickey’s. It is great fun!!

Want to know where to start?

Well first of all, if it isn’t hidden then it isn’t a Hidden Mickey, for example Mickey shaped ice cream cookies are not Hidden Mickey’s. And not every set of three round objects are Hidden Mickey’s, like oranges in a fruit bowl, they are just oranges. Also, if it is very obscure, such that you need to tilt your head to one side and squint with both eyes to see it, then it’s not a Hidden Mickey.

I will give you one to get you started. In Walt Disney Worlds Magic Kingdom, on the Haunted Mansion, as you are passing through the ballroom scene with all the ghosts, take a look at the big table. Pay special attention to the place setting on the far left bottom corner. You will see that two saucers have been placed along with a dinner plate to form a great Hidden Mickey silhouette. Have a look the next time you are there. Although this is not an official Disney Imagineer Hidden Mickey, the cast members working Haunted Mansion reproduce it when the Imagineers reset the attraction.

Don’t forget that Hidden Mickey’s can take any form. Another quick example would be at Disney/MGM Studios, in the Tower of Terror. Watch the video with the family closely and you will see that the small girl is carrying a plush Mickey Mouse.

Have a look next time you are in the parks, or if you see someone looking behind them on an attraction, ask them if it’s a Hidden Mickey, they will love to share it, and that’s what Disney is all about, having fun.
